ACG Tauranga to host top basketball event

ACG Tauranga will be one of five hosts of HoopNation, NZ’s premier basketball event, this Labour weekend.

The event, now in its seventh year, will see 330 games of basketball played over three days by 1,100 players from New Zealand, Australia and Japan. It attracts the country’s best athletes from current NBL teams, NZ Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns, Junior Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns, and Skycity Breakers stables, as well future age group stars.

Fifteen games will be played in ACG Tauranga’s sports complex over Saturday and Sunday.

Paul Berridge, co-founder of HoopNation, said ACG Tauranga’s facility was chosen as it is “One of the best single court stadiums in the region and one of the newest.”

“We are privileged to have a facility that is proving to be in demand for high-quality sporting events,” said ACG Tauranga Principal Shawn Hutchinson.

“It’s great to see it being utilised by school, community groups and top sporting events alike.”

Basketball is on the rise at ACG Tauranga. Our students recently had the opportunity to train with former Tall Blacks captain Byron Vatoe – one of the best coaches in the country – and next year we hope to have a secondary school basketball team in action.
