The power of teamwork

ACG Tauranga’s senior boys futsal team are more than just teammates – they’re best buddies. And according to team member Liam Rickit, the camaraderie they share plays a crucial role in their success.

Earlier this year, the College team took out first place in the Second Division of their interschool competition, losing just one game and holding a goal difference of 34. Now they’re hoping to qualify for First Division and eagerly looking forward to the 2021 ACG House futsal competition.

“The senior boys futsal team is a great group of boys who are all close as friends as well as teammates,” says Liam.

Comprised of one Year 11, one Year 12 and five Year 13 students, the team is a mix of ages, but that doesn’t stop each player taking on their own indispensable role.

Explains Liam, “I am our top assister and best off the ball, Sanghoon is our top scorer and best on the ball, and Memphis is our top defender and fastest player. Top differentiator and best unofficial leader goes to Dannan, Tadiwa is our top dribbler and best playmaker, and Hugo is top shooter and most clinical. Meanwhile Dan takes out the top spot for player development and best weak foot.”

The boys’ sportsmanship, sense of brotherhood, and love of the game has made for some exciting competitions, both for the players and the spectators. And while Liam also plays water polo, hockey, football, basketball and chess, he believes it’s hard to beat the adrenalin-fuelled thrill of a highly competitive futsal game.

“Futsal can be pretty intense – I love the hype and enjoyment of scoring a goal or making an important tackle.”

The three years he has spent playing in the senior boys team have created lifelong memories, and a love of the game that looks set to last.

“Our biggest highlight so far has been beating the other senior boys ACG team – that was amazing! It has definitely inspired me to keep playing futsal after I graduate from ACG Tauranga.”
